Enrichment at Holte School
Broadening horizons. Building confidence. Creating opportunities for life.
At Holte School, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Enrichment gives students opportunities to experience new things, discover their interests, develop their talents and broaden their understanding of the world.
We want every student to leave Holte with more than academic qualifications. We want them to have developed the confidence, knowledge, skills and experiences that will help them succeed in further education, employment and adult life.
Our approach to enrichment is informed by the Department for Education’s Enrichment Benchmarks, which provide a framework for developing a broad, inclusive and purposeful range of experiences for every student. We use this framework to consider the opportunities available to our students, identify gaps in provision and continually improve the experiences we offer.
Enrichment at Holte is closely connected to our curriculum, our core values and our commitment to equality of opportunity. Through educational visits, cultural experiences, outdoor education, sport, community projects, leadership opportunities and experiences that develop wider life skills, we aim to help every student discover their potential and develop a lasting curiosity about the world.
Our enrichment curriculum
The Department for Education identifies five key areas that together support a broad and well-rounded enrichment offer. At Holte, these areas provide a framework for planning, organising and reviewing the experiences available to our students.
Civic engagement
Developing responsible citizens who understand their communities and recognise the positive contribution they can make. Opportunities include volunteering, charity projects, student leadership, school democracy and community involvement.
Arts and culture
Broadening students’ cultural experiences and encouraging creativity, expression and appreciation of the arts. Opportunities include live performances, theatre visits, museums, galleries, music, drama and exploring different languages, religions and cultures.
Nature, outdoors and adventure
Helping students experience the outdoors, embrace challenges and develop resilience, independence and teamwork. Opportunities include outdoor education, residential experiences, environmental projects and learning beyond the classroom.
Sport and physical activities
Encouraging participation, teamwork, healthy lifestyles and the pursuit of personal and collective goals. Opportunities include sporting competitions, school teams, tournaments, physical activities and attending live sporting events.
Developing wider life and future skills
Preparing students for life beyond school by developing communication, problem-solving, independence and an understanding of future opportunities. Experiences may include work-related learning, careers encounters, first aid training, financial and digital literacy, STEM activities and discussions with specialists or expert visitors.
Together, these five areas help us consider the breadth of our enrichment provision and whether students have opportunities to experience different aspects of life beyond their everyday lessons.
The Holte School Enrichment Pledge
We are committed to giving every student the opportunity to benefit from a range of meaningful experiences during their time at Holte.
Our enrichment pledge sets out ten experiences that we want students to have the opportunity to enjoy:
- Enjoy an outdoor education experience.
- Visit a site of historical or cultural significance.
- Watch a live performance.
- Discuss ideas with a specialist or expert visitor.
- Take part in a work-based experience.
- Showcase their talents outside lessons.
- Explore different languages, religions and cultures.
- Complete a community or charity project.
- Experience first aid or mental health training.
- Take part in competitions, challenges and tournaments.
The pledge provides a shared ambition for students’ experiences throughout their time at Holte. It complements our curriculum and helps us consider how we can broaden horizons, develop skills and create opportunities that students might not otherwise encounter.
Enrichment reflects our core values
Our five core values underpin our approach to enrichment and help shape the experiences we want our students to have.
- Collaboration — working together, learning from others and contributing to shared goals.
- Respect — valuing different people, perspectives, cultures and experiences.
- Responsibility — making positive choices and contributing to our school and wider community.
- Aspiration — discovering new interests, embracing challenges and striving to achieve our potential.
- Equality — ensuring every student feels they belong and has the opportunity to participate and succeed.
We want students to put these values into practice through the experiences they undertake, the relationships they build and the contributions they make.
Enrichment for everyone
We believe that enrichment should be an opportunity for every student, not just those who already participate in activities or have previous experience.
We aim to provide an inclusive range of opportunities that reflects the interests, needs and circumstances of our students. We recognise that barriers such as cost, accessibility, transport or confidence can affect participation, and we seek to identify and address these wherever possible.
Student voice is important in shaping our offer. By listening to students, working with families and developing partnerships with organisations beyond school, we can broaden the opportunities available and ensure our provision continues to reflect the needs of the Holte community.
We also want to understand who is participating, who may be missing out and what difference enrichment makes to students’ experiences of school.
Reviewing and developing our provision
The Department for Education’s eight Enrichment Benchmarks provide a structure for reviewing our provision and identifying opportunities for improvement. They encourage schools to align enrichment with their wider educational priorities, offer breadth, communicate opportunities clearly, listen to their communities, remove barriers, develop partnerships, consider outcomes and continually improve.
At Holte, our enrichment map and pledge can help us review the experiences available across year groups, identify gaps and consider whether all students are accessing a broad range of opportunities.
We want to celebrate not only individual achievements, but also students’ participation, personal development and willingness to try something new.
Make the most of your time at Holte
Every new experience offers an opportunity to learn, grow and discover something about yourself and the world around you.
We encourage every student to take part, embrace new challenges and make the most of the opportunities available throughout their time at Holte School.
Collaboration. Respect. Responsibility. Aspiration. Equality.
Dedicated to learning as the foundation for life.
