Enrichment and personal development

The Holte Sixth Form Experience

At Holte Sixth Form, opportunity is everywhere, and ambition has no limits. Guided by our core values of Collaboration, Respect, Responsibility, Aspiration and Equality, we believe education extends far beyond the classroom. Our students are encouraged to immerse themselves fully in The Holte Sixth Form Experience: a rich programme of academic enrichment, leadership opportunities, work-related learning, and personal development designed to broaden horizons and prepare students for successful futures.

It is more than achieving excellent qualifications. It is about developing confident, curious, and capable young adults who are ready to thrive at university, in apprenticeships, employment and throughout their lives. By embracing challenges, developing employability skills, and exploring interests beyond their main courses, our students gain the experiences and attributes needed to succeed in an ever-changing world.

Enrichment and Academic Extension

Our timetabled enrichment programme stretches, challenges, and inspires students to develop intellectual independence and a lifelong love of learning.

Every Year 12 student undertakes one of the following enrichment pathways alongside their A Level and/or Level 3 qualifications:

  • Arts Award (Bronze, Silver or Gold)
  • Level 3 Core Mathematics
  • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
  • Level 3 Speech Grade 6
  • Level 3 Sports Leadership Award

These opportunities allow students to deepen their subject knowledge, develop research and communication skills, and strengthen applications for university, apprenticeships and employment.

Opportunities to Lead and Excel

Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles and participate in nationally recognised programmes that develop confidence, resilience and teamwork skills. Opportunities include:

  • Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award
  • The Excel Project
  • University of Birmingham Access to Birmingham (A2B)
  • University of Birmingham Routes to the Professions (R2P)
  • Aston University Pathways to the Professions
  • In2STEM
  • Student leadership and ambassador roles
  • A wide range of additional enrichment activities throughout the year

Work Experience and Career Development

All Year 12 students are supported in securing a meaningful work placement during our dedicated Work Experience Week in June or July. Working alongside local employers and organisations, students gain valuable insight into professional environments, develop key employability skills and explore future career pathways.

These experiences help students make informed decisions about their next steps while building the confidence, professionalism and independence expected in higher education and the workplace.

At Holte Sixth Form, we encourage students to look beyond their classroom studies and embrace opportunities that stretch their thinking, deepen subject knowledge and develop the intellectual independence required for success at the most competitive universities and career pathways.

Students in Years 12 and 13 are actively encouraged, and in many cases expected, to participate in national competitions, challenges, and Olympiads within their strongest subject areas. These prestigious programmes develop advanced problem-solving skills, academic resilience, critical thinking, and subject mastery, while allowing students to demonstrate excellence beyond their examination courses.

Recent opportunities have included:

  • Senior Mathematical Challenge (Y12–13)
  • UK Chemistry Olympiad
  • British Biology Olympiad (BBO)
  • British Physics Olympiad (BPhO)
  • Young Enterprise

Participation is supported through subject extension sessions, enrichment activities, staff mentoring, and dedicated competition preparation. Students also benefit from guidance on how these experiences can strengthen university applications, particularly for highly competitive courses and Russell Group institutions.

Broadening Horizons

Our enrichment programme is designed to expose students to new ideas, experiences and possibilities. Throughout the year, students benefit from guest speakers, university outreach programmes, employer engagement events, cultural experiences, educational visits and career-focused workshops.

By connecting students with universities, employers, alumni and industry professionals, we help them understand the opportunities available to them and raise aspirations for the future.
