Key stage 4 – Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care
BTEC Tech Awards are new skills-based qualification for students aged 14-16: equivalent in standard to and designed for study alongside GCSEs. BTEC Tech Awards give pupils the chance to get a taste of what the sector is all about, explore different job roles and start building the technical skills and knowledge they’ll need to pursue a career in it.
The BTEC Tech Award for Health & Social Care is a hands-on course that gives learners a taste of what the sector is like, as well as the skills and confidence to succeed in their next steps. With the new BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care, pupils can get to know the core care values, develop valuable skills and explore potential careers.
How the course works – As the BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care is a practical introduction to life and work in the sector, pupils will be able to:
- Develop their knowledge and understanding of the sector.
- Appreciate the importance of care values.
- Analyse and evaluate their skills.
The course has two internally assessed components, and one that’s externally assessed: These components build on each other to motivate pupils by helping them put what they’ve learned into practice and grow in confidence.
Component 1 – Human Lifespan Development (weighting: 30%)
Aim: understand how we grow and develop throughout our lives.
Assessment: internally assessed assignments
During Component 1, pupils will:
- Explore how individuals develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually over time
- Investigate how various factors, events and choices may impact on individuals’ growth and development
- Discover how people adapt to life events and cope with making change
Component 2 – Health and Social Care Services and Values (weighting: 30%)
Aim: get to know how the Health and Social Care sector works and the care values that underpin it.
Assessment: internally assessed assignments
During Component 2, pupils will:
- Learn which health and social care services are available
- Identify why people might need to use these services
- Discover who’s involved in providing these services
- Explore what might stop people from accessing the services they need
- Look at the care values the sector has to make sure people get the care and protection they need.
Component 3 – Health and wellbeing (weighting: 40%)
Aim: Help improve someone’s health and wellbeing
Assessment: Externally assessed task, in which pupils create a health and wellbeing improvement plan for someone based on a brief.
To do this, pupils will:
- Learn what ‘being healthy’ means to different people explore the different factors that might influence health and wellbeing • identify key health indicators and how to interpret them
- Assess someone’s health using what they’ve learned
- Create a health and wellbeing improvement plan for that person which includes targets and recommendations of support services available
- Reflect on the potential challenges the person may face when putting the plan into action.
Homework
Homework tasks will be used to support the understanding of classwork as well as complete work towards assignments.

Key stage 5 – Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Health and Social Care
BTEC Level 3 National Diploma features an expanded eight units and counts as two A Levels. Pupils will be awarded a pass, merit or distinction on each unit and then their overall grade for the eight units will be calculated giving them their final result for the course.
This is a two-year course where pupils will study 8 units over the full duration. Three units are externally assessed consisting of two exams and one assessed research task.

Unit 4- Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care (Assessed research task)

Unit 8 – Promoting Public Health – (Assignment)
Unit 12 – Supporting individuals with additional needs (Assignment)
Unit 19 – Nutritional Health – (Assignment)
