The Business Studies Department at Holte School is a vibrant and enthusiastic team of Business specialists who strive to create an informed, innovative and realistic introduction to the world of Business.​​​​​​​

The subject teaches students how to understand the stimulating and complex world of Business, how it operates internally and its interaction with an ever changing environment.

In order to ensure all students achieve, the department offers a broad range of courses at both Key Stage Four and Key Stage Five and boasts the flexibility to ensure students are on the right course to suit their needs.

To enrich the curriculum offered, a range of effective teaching resources, along with educational visits and speakers are used to ensure that students find Business Studies engaging, relevant and more applicable to the growing skills which are sought after by employers.

KS4

The Key Stage 4 qualification in Business has been developed to:

  • Actively engage students in the study of business, helping them become effective and independent learners as well as reflective thinkers with inquisitive minds.
  • Allow students to develop and apply their business knowledge, understanding, and skills to contemporary issues in various local, national, and global contexts.
  • Enable students to appreciate the diverse perspectives of different business stakeholders.
  • Encourage students to consider the extent to which business activities can be ethical and sustainable.

 

Year 10 & 11

BTEC Level 2 in Enterprise

The BTEC Level 2 in Enterprise is a practical and engaging course designed to provide students with an introduction to the world of business and entrepreneurship. It equips students with the essential knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to create and run their own business or to progress in a business-related career.

Course Structure

The course is structured around three core units:

Unit 1: Exploring Enterprises

  • Overview: This unit introduces students to the world of enterprises and entrepreneurs. Students will investigate different types of enterprises, understand what makes them successful, and explore the characteristics of entrepreneurs.
  • Content: Types of enterprises, characteristics of entrepreneurs, reasons for enterprise success, external influences on businesses.

Unit 2: Planning for and Pitching an Enterprise Activity

  • Overview: Students will develop a business plan for a new enterprise idea and learn how to pitch it effectively. This unit focuses on business planning, market research, and financial forecasting.
  • Content: Business planning, conducting market research, developing a business proposal, financial planning, pitching and presenting business ideas.

Unit 3: Promotion and Finance for Enterprise

  • Overview: This unit helps students understand the importance of promotion and financial planning for enterprises. It covers promotional methods, financial documents, and how to manage finances for an enterprise.
  • Content: Promotional methods, the role of promotion, financial planning and forecasting, financial documents, profitability and liquidity.

Assessment

  • Internal Assessment: Units 1 and 2 are assessed through Pearson Set Assignments and practical tasks. Students will compile a portfolio of evidence, including written reports, presentations, and practical activities.

  • External Assessment: Unit 3 is assessed through an external exam, testing students’ understanding of promotion and finance in business contexts.

  • Business Acumen: Understanding business concepts, financial literacy, market awareness.

  • Practical Skills: Business planning, marketing, pitching.
